Lenten Journey Day 5 – The First Sunday of Lent: Becoming a Follower of God

A follower of God? What does it mean to be a follower of God? I can’t speak for anyone other than myself and I would like to add I am not a trained pastor or educator of the Bible, I am simply and profoundly a Christian. The dictionary states this: a person who believes in the teachings of Jesus Christ. For my purposes here I will be sharing my beliefs and truths, I have never truly associated myself to a particular religion/church/denomination but I have attended and even held memberships with the United Methodist and Disciples of Christ. I have attended Baptists churches and non-denominational churches. What I search for in a church is community, how do they support one another and their surrounding communities; do they have outreach opportunities, and do they provide adult training classes. The most important things are these: does the church recognize and teach that God, is the creator of the universe and is greatly to be praised, believe in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I have learned that church denominations/names mean nothing if the glory does not go to God, if I attend a Disciple of Christ church or I attend a Baptist church…if we all believe the same thing and know that our only hope is in Christ Jesus, we should all be to attend churches of our own choosing based upon our own core beliefs, being different yet similar.” Can’t we just respect one another and share love? Stop the hate, stop the division?? God commands us to love one another, not just the ones who we believe in and do exactly the same things that we do, or even if we like them…No! Love others, period! Love doesn’t mean you giving a stamp of approval, it simply means to love and to have the right to believe and love freely. I read a great book by C.S.Lewis called “Mere Christianity” it was filled with lots of truths about being Christian, it’s a whole life changing process and involves your entire being, every aspect of your life. You are a child of God, you are beloved by Him…never doubt this TRUTH!

Philippians 2:1-11 “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Psalm 18:6-11 “In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry. Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him— the dark rain clouds of the sky.”
