MENTORING MOMENTS – SHINING LIGHT

Bible Reading: Mark 5:25-43

“And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ” But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

This particular story of this unnamed woman goes much deeper than the fact she had been stricken with a bleeding disorder for twelve long years. Because of this condition she would have been treated as unclean according to the Levitical laws. Anything and anyone she came in contact with would have also been considered unclean. I can’t even imagine what her life had been like, most likely total isolation. Her dignity had all but disappeared. Her ears had probably forgotten what it was like to hear kindness and most certainly not felt kindness. So this woman, who believed that the man named Jesus could heal her, she devised a plan and executed it. In fact her faith was so strong she believed that simply touching his clothing would heal her. She was very adept at being ignored by people so she easily made her way through the crowd and seized the opportunity to touch Jesus’ garment as he passed by. She did not want to cause a scene or even be noticed, it was risky to touch anyone because of her condition, let alone Jesus. I can imagine what it felt like when Jesus proclaimed, “Who touched my clothes?” She probably froze and made no sudden moves to cause attention, and likely avoided any eye contact whatsoever. The truth is Jesus did know who touched him, so why did he push the issue with the crowd by saying again, “Who touched me?” At this point fear possibly overtook the woman and she falls at Jesus’ feet, likely trembling with trepidation and tells Jesus everything. I’m sure those in the crowd were gasping and I envision some picking up stones to throw at the woman. But at this moment, Jesus did what Jesus does and He says to the woman, “Daughter.” (I’m envisioning a “Hallmark Moment”…cue tears!). Jesus speaks to her endearingly, something she had nearly forgotten. Jesus wanted to know who touch him because not only did he want to heal her physically but also wanted to restore her humanity and dignity. God saw her, not just ugliness and uncleanliness. Jesus verbally commends her faith, He releases her of any culpability and blesses her with peace. The message of Jesus is … LOVE. It is a love that pursues, a love that sees and a love that offers the gift of being seen. Friends, we too can step up and receive God’s gift of belonging to Him.

“One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him—that she is a sinner.’ Jesus spoke up and said to him, ‘Simon, I have something to say to you.’ ‘Teacher,’ he replied, ‘speak.’ ‘A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?’ Simon answered, ‘I suppose the one for whom he cancelled the greater debt.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘You have judged rightly.’ Then turning towards the woman, he said to Simon, ‘Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.’ Then he said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’ But those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, ‘Who is this who even forgives sins?’ And he said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Challenge Questions

In our story today, Jesus does not look at the outward appearance—He looks at the heart. His gaze penetrating the external actions of the righteousness straight to the secret motivations of the heart. Many of us are like the Pharisee (Simon) in the story, hiding behind a false personas, a self protection mechanism that we can use in our relationships with others and even try to with God.

A question that came to me was this; why did Simon invite Jesus; what was his motivation? Simon was probably someone who was highly regarded in the area. He would have wanted others to see his hospitality. As the story progresses, Jesus points out that the customary actions that were omitted for one reason or another. [No water offered for Jesus’ feet; Jesus was not greeted with a kiss; and No oil to anoint His head].

Jesus said to Simon, “I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.“ Luke 7:44-46

Another question that is puzzling, how is it that this woman, who was regarded as sinful know of Simon’s home and easily entered in. It is quite clear that Simon’s motivation to invite Jesus was for external accolades and not motivated by love or even belief in who Jesus is, from verse 39 of Luke chapter 7; “Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him—that she is a sinner.’” Well, Jesus did know and He knew what was in her heart. Jesus also knew the heart of Simon. Simon thinking himself better than the woman because he followed the “letter of the law” and she was a sinner! And it’s worth mentioning that many additional regulations had been added to Moses’ law at this time in history. “You must diligently observe everything that I command you; do not add to it or take anything from it.”
Deuteronomy 12:32

1. Did the way Jesus interacted with Simon and the woman frighten you?

Frightened, yes I know that I can sometimes be like Simon but I want the heart of the woman who freely gave, loved and worshipped Jesus. I am thankful that Jesus loves me and for His grace and mercy. Through this story, Jesus shows us many characteristics of how to love. Jesus’ love is pure, it is not a superficial and is unconditional. Peter says this; “Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8. Simon and the woman may have been from different background and social rankings but they were both children of God. What was needed then and is still needed today is more kindness, more compassion, more honesty and more followers of Jesus.

2. Did it bring you comfort?

This story brought me more clarity of who Jesus is, who God is and who I am. I am a child: I am a child of God; I am still growing; I am a believer in God, the Father, Jesus Christ, the Son of God and in the Holy Spirit of God. All that I am is because of God, I was created and given purpose and a plan. I was created for God’s glory, not my own.

We should respond to Jesus’ words of forgiveness not as we feel we should, but as we really feel inside. God knows our thoughts anyway. Lay them bare before Him.

Prayer~

Lord Jesus, you knew me before you formed me in my mothers womb. You know my secret places and my heart. How wonderful is your love for me. Forgive me when I go through the motions of a relationship without love. Stir within me a sincere and clean heart. Why did Jesus have to die?

“When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.). The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Discussion Questions:

1. In today’s text Jesus reveals His identity as the Messiah, the promised Savior of the Israelites. But, He also says that the day would come when people of every nationality would worship Him. What does this tell us about Jesus?

It tells me that Jesus, when He looks around He sees His children, not as Jew or Samaritan, just simply His creation. Jesus is all about inclusion not exclusion. Jesus loves all of creation and wants to have a relationship with all His children. Jesus does not need us. But, amazingly, He loves us passionately, and in His goodness He wants us to live with Him forever. We are the ones who are in need of Jesus, in need of what only He can provide…He is our salvation, our solid rock, the perfecter of our faith. “

God is holy, eternal, almighty, and totally self-sufficient. He does not need any created being, but we do need Him. All of creation is dependent on the life that God alone sustains.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.“ —Hebrews 12:1-2 (NRSVA)

2. In Jesus’ day, it would have been unusual for a Jewish man to talk to a woman who was considered sinful. How does this conversation demonstrate Jesus’ love for her? For you?

Jesus sees the hearts of people, He knew of her sin before He spoke to her. He knows my sin and yours too, His love is stronger than all our sins. Jesus paid for our freedom from sin on the cross. We need only to seek forgiveness from our Heavenly Father. My experience with forgiveness is, it is much harder to ask for forgiveness than the actual act of sinning. I don’t necessarily think that this is a bad thing. Seeking forgiveness is confessing and admitting our wrongdoing with remorse. Through Jesus’ ministry it is clear that He came to not only to save His chosen people, the Israelites but for all humankind. From the very foundation of the world, God loved all that was created.

3. What do you want to say in response to Jesus?

Jesus, thank you for creating me and calling me your child. I’m sorry for my sinfulness. Please help me to live the life I was created for, help me to be a light for you wherever I go. I am so very thankful for the opportunities I have to worship you, to read your word and to share you with the people in my life. I am nothing without you, you are my everything.

Hello friends—

As this second week of Lent comes to a close, I am thankful for so many things in my life. My heart is also heavy and I’m saddened by the news reports of war, the ugliness of the world that takes center stage. So many people have lost family members, their homes, their belonging and the list continues. My trust remains in God and He is still in control. I’m reminded that the chaos and troubles we are dealing with all around the globe are all man-made. Mankind often chooses evil over good in this world, but God has not turned His back on His people. I pray that truth and wisdom will prevail, and that the killing and suffering will stop. The answer is right in front of us all…God. It’s a message from long ago, yet still relevant and needed today, “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
—2 Chronicles 7:14 (NRSVA)

Projects & Activities

🌀 Memorize John 3:16, keep it in your heart, because “God so loved YOU that He gave…” You might even choose to write it on a Post-It note and just randomly post them for others to see. You might even post it on social media sites. If you’re familiar with “rock painting” write John 3:16 on a painted rocks for others to find, such as on park benches, newspapers stands…

🌀 Fill a simple jar with prayer requests, designate a day of the week as your special prayer day, spend time praying through one or more requests. These requests can be whatever is on your heart.

🌀 Craft a Passover Lamb using cardboard and a printing picture of a lamb. Use white yard and wrap it around the cardboard cut-out. Or if your really energized use cloth and stuffing to make a lamb. Reference Exodus 12:1-13 and see how Jesus demonstrated His love by becoming the Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world.

1. Where is there suffering and pain?

“Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.”
Galatians 6:2 (NRSVA)

Our broken world is filled with so much suffering and pain. The suffering comes in many different forms; homelessness, poverty, lawlessness, healthcare crisis’, mental health, addiction, and the list grows day by day. From the four corners of the world people are suffering, many of which do an adequate job of hiding. I’m not sure when, how or why the practice of hiding our pain and suffering became the accepted practice with one another. The Bible is quite clear about sharing our burdens, not solving or dissolving them for one another but sharing.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another —and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV).

I believe we can all do more to help ease the daily struggles of many simply by being KIND. I have found that as a grow in years my patience level with others has increased. I think it’s partially due to my own personal experiences of being impatient. Life is entirely too short to, as they say, “don’t sweat the small stuff.” My “soul-life” is my priority, but just like you I work, so I can have a life to live and pay for things I need mostly and a few wants as well. But, I also work to help ours, both with my time and my finances. I am blessed to be able to work at a job I love, with people I love and share the blessings granted to me by God.

2. How might Christ’s compassion within you move you to action?

Each day granted to me by God Almighty is a day to make a difference in someone else’s life. Eyes wide open 👀 God will lead!

The best advice I would give to myself and to anyone asking would be, I was lost and I was found; Christ saved me and He will save you too. Compassion is a BIG word, it literally means “to suffer together.” (From the Greek and Latin)
